Bruce Clay's 2014 Predictions for the SEO Industry
Author: Bruce Clay

In keeping with our annual tradition here at Bruce Clay, Inc., I'd like to share with you my forecast of the search climate in 2014. I've analyzed upcoming technologies and user behavior through the lens of search marketing since 1996, and in my eighth annual predictions I explain why I expect to see the jobs of SEOs and users' online behavior change in the following ways:

  • Google will introduce enhanced features to local, or Places, results that businesses can buy, much like exists for PPC, or coupons with listings.
  • Voice search will pass 30% of all queries across all devices, and searches done on mobile devices will exceed searches done on desktops.
  • In its battle against spam, Google will broaden its net by penalizing newly defined types of spam, including negative SEO, and further lowering its tolerance for spam we're familiar with, such as low-quality links.

10 Reasons You Should Use Google Trends for More Than Just Keyword Research
Author: Chelsea Adams

You've heard of Google Trends. It's that search query "zeitgeist" that Google launched in late 2012 to tell you how interest in the word "twerk" hit an all-time high in August 2013. But do you know that Google Trends is not just another keyword research tool? Where traditional keyword research tools are focused on delivering exact-match volume, Google Trends was built to generate visual, dynamic insights that paint a portrait of the life of a keyword phrase — past, present, and potentially future. Learn more about how:

  • To drive marketing strategy decisions with Google Trends' multi-dimensional visualizations.
  • Google Trends data — provided as relative popularity over time, not total search volume — can provide an apples-to-apples idea of query popularity.
  • Graphed "media coverage incidents" can help marketers see direct correlations between media coverage and spikes in interest.

Peter, verified top consumer trends for 2014

Internet Marketing Secrets
IMS #231 - January 17 2014
Top Consumer Trends for 2014

Hi Peter,

Something nice about a new year,
are all the statistics pouring in from
the previous year. If you're willing to
go through them, you'll discover clear
trends and emerging markets that you
can jump on, before anyone else.

As expected, retail sales were down, but
internet sales were up. Purchases from
mobile devices, including tablets hit new
highs. No surprise there.

(In the future I envision retail stores
where you can't actually buy anything.
They'll have one of everything, to touch
and feel. Then you'll have to order it
from a computer in store. Perhaps a drone
will deliver it, so its waiting for you,
by the time you get home.) ;-)

More people will be buying additional
video services this year. Some will be
getting extra TV channels, while the
majority will be adding paid internet
services like Netflix.

Sales of tablet computers and smart
phones continue explosive growth, but
it's not the kids buying them, it's the
seniors. Many in this wealthy sector are
getting their first experiences and
frustrations in the world of mobile.

Sales of patio furniture are up again.
So are the sales of anything to do with
back yard entertaining. Growth remains
significant in the category at 4% per
year, for the past four years.

Food, alcohol, entertainment and the arts
all remain strong. So does the informal
clothing sector.

On the down side are sugary drinks.
Anything with sweetened with the evil
glucose and fructose were hard hit,
declining 10% over the previous year.
But then again, bottled water is way up,
meaning that soda companies will still
find a way into your pockets. ;-)

Something quite interesting is that
people continue to splurge on high end
vacations and adventures, even if they
are unaffordable. But this behavior isn't
as odd as you might think, according to
some social psychologists.

With things like cars and furniture, the
newness wears off quickly. They become
just a way to get to work and something
to sit on within a month of ownership.

Experiences on the other hand, last
a lifetime. The trend is that people
prefer to buy, or rent, experiences
and memories, because they provide
greater long term satisfaction than
tangible items.

So how do I know all this? It's because
the Canadian government told me so.

Most statistics and studies are fudged
towards whomever paid for them. The ones
from the government sector, usually tell
you how it is.

I suggest that you poke around your
national government sites for statistics.
In my country, Stats Canada has plenty
of feeds, with everything from the state
of mining and agriculture, all the way to
retail trends for the past year.

Once you've absorbed the stats, you
can pretty much sum up what the year
is going to be like. You'll know what
markets to get into and how it will
affect your existing business, either
directly or indirectly.

What I took from my research, is that
people are cocooning more than ever.
Increased sales in video services and
patio furniture mean that more people are
entertaining from home. They are becoming
more health conscious fading out soda for
bottled water and red wine.

Renting a vast variety of experiences,
instead of owning just a few expensive
things, is a fundamental shift in
thinking, compared to a couple of decades
ago. This means that luxury, adventure,
travel and experiences count more than
owning a home, diamonds, gold, or a
fancy car.

Anyone who caters to home entertaining
and luxury experiences will do well this
year. As for the interval between the two
extremes, expect a slight improvement
over last year. At least that's what I
was able to glean from the Stats Canada
feeds. I hope that you found it useful
as well.

take care,

Michael

P. S.

Last year was intense. I logged over
500 coaching sessions and consultations,
which left little time to write you. I'm
currently working on a new solution, so
I can share this distilled plethora of
knowledge with more than one person
at a time. But... I don't want to spill
the beans just yet. I'll save it for the
next newsletter.

In the mean time, if you'd like to book
a session with me to increase your
conversion rates, improve your copy,
or get advice on publishing, advertising
or marketing, give me a call. I wish you
all the best for a prosperous 2014, and
look forward to helping you establish,
achieve and exceed, all your internet
marketing goals.

From Andy, ezseonews.com

Hi Peter
I just wanted to wish all of you who celebrate this time of a year
a Merry Christmas. I haven't been too active with the
newsletter in recent weeks, especially not the SEO side of things,
but I am hoping to put that right in the New Year. So much has
changed with SEO that making small mistakes can bring down your
site. Hopefully in 2014 I'll have time to write about the changes
that are happening with the search engines,Google in particular.

On another topic, I started a series of Createspace tutorials
on the website, but did not finish them. The good news is that I
have written up the entire process as a Kindle book. This book
will be free to donwload from all Amazon stores from tomorrow, 25th
December, for 5 days.

Here are the links for that:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HG0GE0C
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HG0GE0C

On other Amazon stores, just search for it using the ASIN number:
B00HG0GE0C

In the newsletter I sent out a few days ago, I told you about a
special promotion on my Kindle Publishing book, but it was US only
(and that means people living in the US, not people with Amazon US
accounts). I could not set this up on the UK store at the same
time because of an issue with Amazon, so I have set it up on Amazon
UK so that the book costs 0.99. This runs from today, 24th
December, 8AM GMT, until 27th December.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BEIX34C

And finally, tonight is Christmas Eve. If you've got kids, I
think they will really enjoy my children's story, "When
Golfo Saved Christmas". It's a short story that I wrote
for my own kids, and tonight is the best night to read it, just
before they go to bed. I have put it on special for this week at
$0.99 (or the equivalent in your currency).

Details here: http://whengolfosavedchristmas.com/

I hope you have a wonderful time (whether you celebrate Christmas
or not), and a great New Year.

all the best

Peter, how is your SEO now?

Internet Marketing Secrets
October 31 2013
How is your SEO now?

Peter,

Google is sick. Their search results
suck. They're worse now than they've
ever been.

They've gone off the deep end, focused
like a laser on brands and fresh content,
but it didn't change anything. The
content farms prevail no matter what
they do. Or is it what they really want?

In trying to 'algo' their way to a better
search experience, they've thrown baby
out with the bathwater and 90% of good
websites along with it. What remains is a
mashup of brands and authority sites,
with little variety in search results.

Even if you've been an angel, using best
practices, all original content and white
hat strategies, none of it matters to
Google lately. If you're not a major
brand or content farm, you're out
of luck.

A quick case in point. When I Google my
name, I'm not found. Before you could
find Michael Campbell the consultant
(that would be me), a high school
principle, the football player, the
ombudsman, an inmate, photographer,
the artist and several others. We each
had one listing in the top 10 results.

Now, the only search results coming
out of my data center are for Michael
Campbell the golfer and the radio talk
show host. That's two people, or brands,
hogging ALL top 10 results and well onto
the second page.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't about me.
It's about the millions of people like
me, who used to show up, but don't
anymore. Well... unless they are working
for a major brand, or a portal like a
newspaper, magazine, or some other
content farm.

Another case in point is my book on road
trips. You would think the website of the
guy who actually went on a six month road
trip, who drove across Canada and back
through the USA would have some
authority. Not anymore.

In addition to the website, I wrote a
book on Planning Road Trips which sells
on Amazon. You'd figure if the website is
missing, at least the book would have
some authority and be found in Google's
search results. Nope.

(Again, this isn't about me. It's about
the thousands of independent authors and
content producers like me, that had their
books and websites suddenly disappear
from Google's search results.)

What you will find in the search results
now, are thousands of articles produced
by contracted employees of the major
portals. They are written for the masses,
because they read at a mere grade six
level. I call them fraudicles, because
the whole thing is a facade for Google's
AdSense revenue.

They have tips like, "Planning a road
trip? Tip one, be sure to pack snacks and
bring water." Gee... no kidding... what a
mind blower... bring snacks and water on
a road trip... who'd a thunk it?

I'd laugh, but it makes me want to puke.
So does the fact that a major portal, a
household brand, tried to recruit me to
head up their spam... er... I mean
content farm 'frauduction' department.

Here's what they do. They target every
keyword over a dollar fifty. They have
thousands of contracted writers. They
pump out keyword rich fraudicles at the
rate of 50 - 100 per day. They then post
these articles on their portal, to get
AdSense revenue in the expensive
keyword categories.

It's a lucrative shill. I don't know if
Google's oblivious to the madness, but
one thing is for sure, there's no denying
that they are a revenue sharing partner
in it.

These portals are producing spam by the
caseload. But because Google is favoring
authority and freshness, these sites have
gone into overdrive, filling the search
results with drivel. You and I, not
having the authority, the production
capacity, or freshness in mass, cannot
keep up.

In addition to this madness, Google has
nuked all link building that comes from
the webmaster. So in other words, if the
link is something the webmaster
initiated, it's not considered spam, but
weightless, meaning it doesn't count
towards your rankings. The only link they
value, is if someone has linked to your
content on their own merit.

So what does that mean? A lot of links
are now becoming useless. It includes
links that:

- have anchor text matching domain names
- have anchor text matching page titles
- are out of context with their content
- come from article directories
- come from press releases
- come from paid links of any kind
- come from website directories
- are in sidebars of other websites
- come from any webmaster's effort

So what can you do about it?

You could read hundreds of articles and
blog posts. But chances are, they were
written by SEOs, who get their intel by
reading the posts of other SEOs. So what
you end up with are publicly regurgitated
aggregates of aggregates.

What you need are tested strategies and
tactics. What you need are proven
results. A community of SEO experts who
play their cards very close to their
chest, then share their findings, but
only with members of their guild.

For me, that group is the SEO Revolution
headed by Jerry West. I've been a member
of his private site for as long as I can
remember. It's my source of SEO news.
It's how I keep up on changes that
matter. It's where I get my actionable
advice.

I've managed to claw my way back into
the top 10 for this newsletter. Yes, even
after 15 years of publication, it got
bumped out of Google's search results by
a plethora of mindless fraudicles. So if
I'm not safe, even after 15 YEARS of white
hat grinding and publishing, no one is.

It's time for a revolution. An SEO
Revolution. It's the only SEO community
that matters. It's the only source of
intel you'll want, starting today.
