Internet Marketing Secrets
IMS #215 - March 22 2012

Peter,

Here is a bounty of useful tips, websites,
ideas and rants, aka "secrets" that I've
uncovered, poked at and thought about
lately. I hope that you put them to good
use, or at least file them away until
needed. ;-)

Don't Make This Mistake

The last thing you need are legal
problems. To prevent them from
happening, you need the proper
disclaimers on your websites and blogs.

The Legal Forms Generator creates those
disclaimer pages for you. They protect
your business and increase conversion
rates, because they make you look
professional.

It only takes a few minutes to get the
legal forms that you need. Then you can
rest assured, knowing that your online
business is respected and well protected.

INTERNET MARKETING SECRETS

Three Questions Prevent Failure

You might know Jim Collins for his works
Good to Great, or How the Mighty Fall.
Both of those are worth reading or
listening to, while you're exercising or
commuting. You'll discover why some
companies prosper while others fail.

Here's a quick short story from 2003.
Find out how Jim himself almost failed,
but found his calling as a researcher.
He's mentor asked him three questions.
I suggest that you ask them of yourself,
if you want to be successful and happy
in your work. http://bit.ly/5jIHEn

Pinterest Pins the Blame on You

Pinterest seems to be gaining plenty
of steam and attention in the press.
It's basically a scrapbooking site that
lets you collect, or "pin" things you're
interested in, so you can share them
with others.

Just beware of "what" you pin on Pinterest
though. If you violate copyright and get
in trouble, Pinterest's TOS says that you
hold them harmless, and agree to pay their
legal fees in addition to yours. Yikes!

Don't expect a claim of "fair use" to hold
up in court, just because commenting on
images is mandatory. Someone's really
going to "pin it" to them... and some poor
user. http://read.bi/xi78Od

Marketing Psychology

Susan Weinschenk Ph.D. aka The Brain
Lady - as featured on TED Talks - is one
to watch and learn from. Her research on
what makes people click is essential. So
is her work on neuro web design.

If you want to get inside the minds of
your customers, get everything of hers
that you can. And don't just read it once.
Memorize it. Read it over and over until
you know it. I have found her work to be
as important as Robert Cialdini and Roy H.
Williams. http://bit.ly/cUObnA

Better Calls to Action

Call to action is a phrase I coined back
in 1999. Essentially it's a few words,
usually in the form of a command, telling
the person what to do next. It could be to
make a purchase, subscribe, download a
report, or some other action.

A good call to action can increase your
conversion rates. For example, if you were
trying to get squirrels out of your attic,
which text would convert more; Download
the Report or Get Rid of Squirrels Now!

This post makes key points about creating
better calls to action. The only thing
they missed is the color of the button.
My "Color Persuasion" research (it's the
bonus report that you get with Ultimate
Heatmap) shows orange to be the most
effective color for a call to action
button. http://bit.ly/zXFI16

SEO for Wordpress

Joost de Valk is unquestionably the
leading mind when it comes to SEO for
Wordpress. If you're still using some
other SEO plugin, or the twaddle that
came with your theme, you might consider
trashing it for Joost's plugin instead.

Go search for Joost SEO and you'll find
it. Once you have it installed, read this
guide to optimize your site.
http://bit.ly/cMk73I

Then go watch this video, so you can get
more out of it. Plus you'll find some gems
on SEO in general, like why it's smart to
shut off the date archives in Wordpress.

Keyword Research

Right after market research comes
keyword research. Most people are
familiar with the Google Keyword tool
and third party services like Wordtracker.
But one little-known tool is a service
called Ubersuggest.

Ubersuggest uses Google and other
suggest type services for results.
They also provide insight into shopping,
news, video, even recipes. Simply enter
your root word into the tool and get back
hundreds of keyword ideas from real user
queries. http://bit.ly/FOJc0Z

Google Detects & Deletes Blog Networks

In the last few weeks, Google has been
deindexing private blog networks. These
are services that sell links and let you
post to hundreds of blogs at a time. It
doesn't matter if they are on separate IP
addresses or not. http://bit.ly/xp2EhB

Most of the content posted on these "blog
link farms" were spun articles, creating
several backlinks from unrelated content.
Even if the content and titles were spun
up to 50%, Google found three word
fingerprints, as well as sudden link
growth, and penalized the lot.
http://bit.ly/FOonpG

Google publicly stated they are, "...
turning off a method of link analysis that
we used for several years." It appears to
be link popularity - the shear number of
links - that won't matter anymore. What
will matter are quality links, and deep
links, in context, from topically related
content.

- - - - -

Google's Freshness Factor

Sudden link growth isn't always a bad
thing. You could get 1,000 links overnight
and not be penalized. So long as there's
social proof to back it up.

Most new links would come from related
blog categories - at least related at a
high level like travel, exercise, cars -
while others would come from casual
bloggers. The trick to avoiding the filter
is the social factor. There needs to be
enough buzz in the social media space to
warrant the sudden link growth.

So in other words, don't worry about
Google's Freshness Factor, unless you have
a site dealing with news, sports, weather,
or some other time sensitive content.
Those are the only times when freshness
matters. Stick to writing quality content
that you have some level of expertise in,
and you will create the kind of content
that naturally attracts quality links over
time.

Then as you creep up the rankings, it will
be nearly impossible to knock you out of
the top 10. (Unless you do something
really silly like participating in private
blog networks.) ;-)

New Wordpress Membership Software

Move over Wishlist, there's a new kid on
the block. Premise 2.0 has matured from
a landing page maker into a full fledged
digital sales system.

Brought to you by the fine folks at
Copyblogger, the new Premise creates
secure membership sites, secure product
downloads, advanced lead gen and
recurring payments.

Add to this their split testing, landing
page creator (including video ones) built
in SEO, plus copywriting assistance, and
you have a real winner.

If you're fed up with Wishlist, or you've
tried some of the others and they didn't
work out for you, then Premise may be just
what you need. It's a full fledged digital
sales system and it works with any
Wordpress theme. http://bit.ly/GDOgrn

Advertising and Persuasion

Serious students of advertising have
missed Terry O'Reilly's Age of Persuasion
podcast since it stopped in June of 2011.
He's one of the brightest minds in
advertising. His shows are entertaining,
informative, bursting with fun facts and
nuggets of wisdom.

You can pick up several of the past
episodes and subscribe to the old iTunes
feed, if you missed any shows.
http://bit.ly/yw5X6U Or better yet, you
can catch his new show Under the Influence
on iTunes. Just go search for it and enjoy
all new episodes of Terry's genius.

SEO Newsletter Turns 100! The Evolution of a Company Newsletter, Eight Years in the Making

Author: Jessica Lee

The year was 2004, and newsletters in the SEO industry were a growing trend. But, there was something missing -- not all of them provided the type of knowledge transfer to the community that Bruce Clay, Inc. knew was a necessity at that time. People needed to learn more about SEO strategies that provided long-term value, what worked, what didn’t work and how to do it.

The Bruce Clay website was a popular place for visitors to receive the information they needed on search engine optimization, but BCI wanted to diversify the medium of delivery. Long before social media and the other channels that are available to us today existed, email marketing in the form of newsletters were among the first forms of content marketing. With the desire to educate the community, the SEO Newsletter was born.

The story of how a newsletter comes to be and the challenges and successes it faces over the years is an interesting one. Our SEO Newsletter, more than eight years in the making, certainly has some stories to tell and some lessons to be learned.

SMX West 2012 Highlights and Post-Show Analysis

Author: Virginia Nussey

Search and social media marketing events are frequently the stage for major developments in industry practices and schools of thought. The first big U.S. search engine marketing (SEM) conference of the new year, SMX West, tackled a multitude of newly emerging issues facing SEOs and interactive marketers.

Consider that in the few months of 2012 that have passed, Google outlined more than 40 changes to search results affecting the presentation of local results, the valuation of link equity and analytics data provided to webmasters.

Bruce Clay, Inc. attended SMX West and here, we have collected the most popular topics of discussion among speakers and attendees and the totality of our SMX West coverage. The majority of the content falls under one of three categories: search engine marketing, social media marketing and conference attendee tips.

SEO Factors & Trends Report 2012

Author: Brent Yorzinski

On February 21, 2012, Google announced on its webmaster central blog that they are launching video support for schema.org, calling it the "recommended way to describe videos on the web". This means it is increasingly important that all on-page markup relating to video contains as much information as possible.

Schema.org is a partnership amongst Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and Yandex to create a structured markup to catalogue snippets of information and use them to enhance the way search engine results may be displayed. The ultimate goal of schema.org is to make it simpler for people to locate relevant information. More information, including their full definition can be found at Schema.org.

This, combined with Google’s announcement, makes it even clearer that following the guidelines suggested is valuable.

  Hot Topics

On March 16, the next generation iPad became availableand was welcomed with crowds of consumers across 10 countries, as they huddled outside Apple stores to purchase the new tablet.

In the search community, tactics for mobile SEO have been tried and tested for some time now, but new data from Apple suggests that perhaps mobile site and SEO strategy should be at the forefront for websites. At the Apple iPad 3 event in the beginning of March, Apple announced that it sold more iPads in the last quarter alone than any PC manufacturer sold in their entire line.

This data supports what many of us suspect: mobile devices for search will become a preferred means, as more and more people use devices like iPads and iPhones, and as the younger generations become the consumer.

Users may still find some online tasks to be better suited for PCs, for example, making actual purchases through shopping carts and conducting extensive research on a topic; but, time spent on a mobile device for local search and social media will continue to rise. And, as mobile Web usage becomes more sophisticated, those online tasks typically reserved for PCs are likely to migrate to mobile.

So, what are some things you can do to get your site mobile ready?

In December 2011, Google announced Googlebot-Mobile, a spider that crawls the Web as a smartphone to provide a better user experience for mobile users. A recent article on Search Engine Watch explains how to best set up a site for Googlebot-Mobile.

But even with this new development, many believe Googlebot-Mobile is not as impactful as it could be. In a recent article by iCrossing, it stated mobile search results only slightly changed after this implementation, and that mobile-specific websites do nothing to improve a site’s position in the results. iCrossing suggests using the CSS3 technology called “media queries” resolves the conflict between mobile user experience and SEO.

But Bing, on the other hand, is simplifying mobile search. Earlier this month, Bing announced a one-URL stancefor mobile which states that for each website, instead of having different URLs per platform (desktop versus mobile), there only needs to be one. Many welcome this update and wonder when Google will follow Bing.

And of course, with user experience at the forefront of mobile search, there are certainly best practices for mobile site design that any business can follow to get a website mobile-ready.

  Attaboys

Facebook introduced new placements of premium ads and Sponsored Stories. Sponsored Stories are now being displayed in the News Feed on mobile devices, and premium ads are now shown on the log-out page. An entirely new marketing option, Facebook Offers, lets businesses share discounts and promotions from their Facebook page. Facebook also introduced a way for users to organize their feed with interest lists.

The third-generation Apple iPad is now available. Improvements to the tablet include a 5-megapixel camera with advanced optics, availability to connect to 4G LTE networks, and a Retina display that gives it the best mobile display available.

An ad by the South Australian Tourism Commission to promote Kangaroo Island has resulted in an increase of 208 percent on searches for “Kangaroo Island.” John Baker, managing partner of the Adelaide agency that made the ad has called it “probably the most beautiful thing we’ve ever created.”

  Word on the Wire

The W3C's Do Not Track technology that would allow users to set preferences for online tracking has received support from the White House. A Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights has also been proposed by the White House.

A new application of the Facebook and Bing integration rolled out on the search engines. The new Linked Pages allows users to add pages to a Bing search for that user's name and to see associated pages on searches for their Facebook friends.

Google+ Circles is now layered over Google Voice, allowing users to manage callers with increased control.

Yahoo! has filed suit against Facebook for patent infringement, with the strongest claims directed toward social networking technologies.

Facebook recently changed all brand pages over to the new Timeline format. There are a few pretty cool features that are worth knowing about and some changes to the way brands need to handle applications. Timeline pages have an 850-pixel-wide header image. The new format also allows for a story to be pinned to the top of the Timeline. Hiring? Keep that post up top. Pinned content will sit at top-left of page for seven days.
