Hi Peter

I have another Wordpress tutorial for you in a moment, but first a
heads up. Google have stopped showing author images and
"circle counts" in the search results. However,
connecting your content to your Google Plus profile is still very
important, as Google are using "author rank" in their
algorithm.

OK, on to the Wordpress tutorial.

I get asked about Wordpress security a lot, and it is a major
concern for anyone with a Wordpress website. I recorded a video
showing you the first line of defence I use on my own Wordpress
sites. I've been using this plugin since 2007 and NEVER had a
single site hacked in that time (I installed it on around 100
websites during this time).

If that is something that interests you, you can watch the video

Peter, why did you do it?

Internet Marketing Secrets
IMS #233 - June 26 2014
Why did you do it?

Peter,

I spent five years working on this
and I'm giving it to you. It's called
Business Typology and the Virtual Filing
System. The bottom line, the big "reason
why" I created it is this...

Everything else in life comes and goes,
including resources, possessions,
knowledge, health, skill, looks, etc.
Time is the one of the very few things
that mankind cannot make more of.
Since we cannot make more of it, all
we can do is save it.

That's why I created the Business
Typology. It has only one purpose...
to give you more of your lifetime back,
so instead of wasting it looking for
things, you get to spend it how
you want.

So what is it and what does it do?
It's a virtual filing system, that lets
you categorize, tag & store everything
on your computer, so you can retrieve it
FAST and get more of your lifetime back.

Get it: http://www.dynamicmedia.com/btz

Go get it, because once you do start
using it, you'll be surprised at how much
time it saves every day. So stop losing
your days. Stop wasting time looking for
things. File things and find them FAST,
with Business Typology and the Virtual
Filing System.

chat soon,

Michael

P.S.

I'll have your regular newsletter back on
track starting next week. The combo of
being a new daddy and swamped with
consultations are my two leading excuses
for not writing, but it's killing me,
because I have a plethora of new tips
to share with you.

I've also revamped my website and
finally posted all the different types of
coaching and consulting packages that you
can get. Take a peek if you have moment,
after grabbing Business Typology and let
me know what you think. Thanks!

Hi Peter

It's been a busy week what with all of these Wordpress
tutorials, and today is no different. I was asked specifically
about Amazon affiliate links and getting them to open in a new
window, so I recorded a short video on getting Amazon links and
working with them in Wordpress to insert them into a post, and make
them open in a new window.

Hi Peter

So far this week I've sent you links to three new Wordpress
tutorials. Today I have another Wordpress tutorial that I get
asked for quite a bit. The tutorial is called "Creating
Custom Sidebars in Wordpress". This tutorial shows how you
can show/hide widgets on different sections of your website, giving
you more control over your site. This is particularly useful when
you want to show different content in the sidebar (or other
widgetized areas) on different areas of your site. Or maybe you
want to show one advert to visitors on mobile devices, and another
to visitors on a desktop computer?

If that is something that interests you, you can watch the video

Hi Peter

Yesterday I sent you links to two new Wordpress tutorials. Today I
have another one that was requested by a newsletter subscriber.

The title of this one is "Handling Images in Wordpress".

In it, I look at how to make sure images are the right size for
your content, without slowing page loading too much.

Hi Peter

Time certainly seems to fly these days. It's almost a month
since my last "newsletter" when I notified you of the
final update to the Penguin hit website autopsy. I apologize for
not writing a little more regularly, but I have been really busy
with a few different things.

One thing I am trying to do this week is add at least one tutorial
per day to my http://rapidwpsites.com/ website.

Today I added two. The first was a tutorial showing how I
reinstated the underline to hyperlinks on that site. The current
trend amongst Wordpress theme designers seems to be to remove the
underline from hyperlinks, and I think this is a mistake. The
underline makes it perfectly clear to visitors what is a link.
Having text a different colour to indicate a link is not as
intuitive, and probably causes a problem for colour-blind visitors
who might not see the difference in colour. If you are interested
in that tutorial, you can see it here:

http://rapidwpsites.com/tutorials/adding-the-underline-back-to-hyperlinks/

Although the tutorial is looking at a Genesis theme, the same
principles apply to most themes.

The second tutorial is a simple one, showing how to install social
sharing buttons on a Wordpress site. There are so many social
sharing plugins available, but I cover two in particular that I
like. You can see that video here:

http://rapidwpsites.com/tutorials/adding-social-sharing-buttons-to-your-website/

I am planning more of these tutorials this week, so if there is any
particular Wordpress tutorial that you would like to see, fill in
the contact form on the website and let me know.

On another topic, I set myself a goal this month. I wanted to
write a new Kindle book and I decided to write a book called
"Writing Web Content", with a particular emphasis on the
type of content that has a chance to rank and stick in Google. I
am 90% of the way there, and will hopefully get it completed by the
end of this month. It should therefore be available on Amazon near
the beginning of July. I find that making goals like this keep me
focused, but often means I neglect my newsletter.

I should have another update very soon about the new Wordpress
tutorials, so again, if there is a tutorial you would like to see,
let me know.

all the best

Experts in search engine optimization, content marketing, social media strategy and paid search shared their insights, experience and recommendations with attendees of the sold-out conference. Information was flying fast, and that's why Bruce Clay, Inc. sent liveblogger Jayme Westervelt to report key sessions as they happened.

Westervelt liveblogged sessions focusing on critical SEO, social media and content marketing issues. Read on for takeaways from each session, and click through to read each liveblog in its entirety. If you have any comments or questions, keep the conversation going by letting us know in the blog comments.

SEO

The Periodic Table of SEO Ranking Factors

2014's chief elements on the ever-evolving Periodic Table of SEO Ranking Factors are Google+, on-page optimization, site speed, internal links, brand management and, above all else, content, according to Searchmetrics' Marcus Tober. Tober, Marianne Sweeny (Portent) and Matthew Brown (Moz) examine these factors, paying special attention to the user experience as it relates to them. This liveblog is a blueprint for SEO success from master SEO architects.

Enhancing Search Results w/ Structured Data & Markup

Implementing structured data schema markup can result in increased click-through rates. Marshall Simmonds (Define Media Group) says that there's still plenty of time to get into the rich snippets game – most of your competitors aren't taking advantage of rich snippets, which means all the more opportunity for you to stand out in the SERP. Simmonds and fellow speakers share their structured data strategies and give examples of brands doing it right.

What Advanced SEOs Should Be Doing about Mobile

Thinking of creating an app? Get tips on deep linking and canonicalization from Google Senior Engineer Maile Ohye. Ohye breaks down the process for building a mobile strategy and shares Google resources that can aid developers. Cindy Krum, the CEO of MobileMoxie, delves into mobile ranking signals including bi-directional annotation, side-to-side scrolling, Flash, deferred loading of JavaScript and more. Covario's Michael Martin and Brightedge's Jim Yu also share insights.

You & A with Matt Cutts

Search Engine Land Editor Danny Sullivan sits down with Google Distinguished Engineer Matt Cutts for a no-holds-barred conversation about anything and everything SEO-related. Cutts fields questions including:

  • Has there been a Panda update since last year?
  • Is Google using Author Rank for anything aside from in-depth articles?
  • Is link building dead?
  • Is Google+ dead?
  • What's your favorite Google tool?

Technically Speaking: Advanced Technical SEO Issues

Explore the finer points of JavaScript execution, secure search benefits, Ajax and more in this session that focuses on improving indexability and relevance, all with the most technical SEO issues in mind. Speakers include Maile Ohye (Google), Bill Hung (Back Azimuth) and Eric Wu (SpinMedia). Within the session, Hunt specifically talks about site challenges he's encountered – and how he's overcome them.

Ask the SEOs

Renowned SEOs Greg Boser, Rae Hoffman, Jeff Preston, Marshall Simmonds and Ellen White answer questions in a roundtable discussion on the state of Internet marketing. Always an SMX highlight, this year didn't disappoint. The SEOs answer questions including:

  • Do you think internal linking is still effective?
  • Will new global TLD impact search?
  • Can you share your experiences on how to get somebody out of a Penguin penalty?
  • When do you decide when to just give up in a Penguin penalty situation?
  • What are some of your favorite enterprise level tools?

Social Media

25 Social Media Ideas for the Advanced Search Marketer

Four expert social media marketers break down how to add social media to your company's overall Internet marketing strategy. Lisa Williams (Search Discovery) talks about first steps include identifying priorities, creating calendars, and defining your assets. Michael King (Acronym) explains how to find content that works for your unique audience and shares tools that will help. Matt Siltala (Avalaunch Media) hones in on using visual content within your social media campaigns and Mark Traphagen (Stone Temple Consulting) takes a deep dive into Google+ and its impact on search.

Content Marketing

Executing a Flawless Content Marketing Strategy

Interested in getting the most out of your content? Then this session is for you. Three acclaimed content marketers provide ideas on leveraging trends, repurposing content and taking your content's reach to the next level with testing and measuring. The session focuses on the role of authority and authenticity, and Dave Roth (Move, Inc.) shares a case study from Realtor.com.
