Peter, how is your SEO now?

Internet Marketing Secrets
October 31 2013
How is your SEO now?

Peter,

Google is sick. Their search results
suck. They're worse now than they've
ever been.

They've gone off the deep end, focused
like a laser on brands and fresh content,
but it didn't change anything. The
content farms prevail no matter what
they do. Or is it what they really want?

In trying to 'algo' their way to a better
search experience, they've thrown baby
out with the bathwater and 90% of good
websites along with it. What remains is a
mashup of brands and authority sites,
with little variety in search results.

Even if you've been an angel, using best
practices, all original content and white
hat strategies, none of it matters to
Google lately. If you're not a major
brand or content farm, you're out
of luck.

A quick case in point. When I Google my
name, I'm not found. Before you could
find Michael Campbell the consultant
(that would be me), a high school
principle, the football player, the
ombudsman, an inmate, photographer,
the artist and several others. We each
had one listing in the top 10 results.

Now, the only search results coming
out of my data center are for Michael
Campbell the golfer and the radio talk
show host. That's two people, or brands,
hogging ALL top 10 results and well onto
the second page.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't about me.
It's about the millions of people like
me, who used to show up, but don't
anymore. Well... unless they are working
for a major brand, or a portal like a
newspaper, magazine, or some other
content farm.

Another case in point is my book on road
trips. You would think the website of the
guy who actually went on a six month road
trip, who drove across Canada and back
through the USA would have some
authority. Not anymore.

In addition to the website, I wrote a
book on Planning Road Trips which sells
on Amazon. You'd figure if the website is
missing, at least the book would have
some authority and be found in Google's
search results. Nope.

(Again, this isn't about me. It's about
the thousands of independent authors and
content producers like me, that had their
books and websites suddenly disappear
from Google's search results.)

What you will find in the search results
now, are thousands of articles produced
by contracted employees of the major
portals. They are written for the masses,
because they read at a mere grade six
level. I call them fraudicles, because
the whole thing is a facade for Google's
AdSense revenue.

They have tips like, "Planning a road
trip? Tip one, be sure to pack snacks and
bring water." Gee... no kidding... what a
mind blower... bring snacks and water on
a road trip... who'd a thunk it?

I'd laugh, but it makes me want to puke.
So does the fact that a major portal, a
household brand, tried to recruit me to
head up their spam... er... I mean
content farm 'frauduction' department.

Here's what they do. They target every
keyword over a dollar fifty. They have
thousands of contracted writers. They
pump out keyword rich fraudicles at the
rate of 50 - 100 per day. They then post
these articles on their portal, to get
AdSense revenue in the expensive
keyword categories.

It's a lucrative shill. I don't know if
Google's oblivious to the madness, but
one thing is for sure, there's no denying
that they are a revenue sharing partner
in it.

These portals are producing spam by the
caseload. But because Google is favoring
authority and freshness, these sites have
gone into overdrive, filling the search
results with drivel. You and I, not
having the authority, the production
capacity, or freshness in mass, cannot
keep up.

In addition to this madness, Google has
nuked all link building that comes from
the webmaster. So in other words, if the
link is something the webmaster
initiated, it's not considered spam, but
weightless, meaning it doesn't count
towards your rankings. The only link they
value, is if someone has linked to your
content on their own merit.

So what does that mean? A lot of links
are now becoming useless. It includes
links that:

- have anchor text matching domain names
- have anchor text matching page titles
- are out of context with their content
- come from article directories
- come from press releases
- come from paid links of any kind
- come from website directories
- are in sidebars of other websites
- come from any webmaster's effort

So what can you do about it?

You could read hundreds of articles and
blog posts. But chances are, they were
written by SEOs, who get their intel by
reading the posts of other SEOs. So what
you end up with are publicly regurgitated
aggregates of aggregates.

What you need are tested strategies and
tactics. What you need are proven
results. A community of SEO experts who
play their cards very close to their
chest, then share their findings, but
only with members of their guild.

For me, that group is the SEO Revolution
headed by Jerry West. I've been a member
of his private site for as long as I can
remember. It's my source of SEO news.
It's how I keep up on changes that
matter. It's where I get my actionable
advice.

I've managed to claw my way back into
the top 10 for this newsletter. Yes, even
after 15 years of publication, it got
bumped out of Google's search results by
a plethora of mindless fraudicles. So if
I'm not safe, even after 15 YEARS of white
hat grinding and publishing, no one is.

It's time for a revolution. An SEO
Revolution. It's the only SEO community
that matters. It's the only source of
intel you'll want, starting today.

There is hope. If you want to get your

Hi

Yesterday I posted a video called "Is LSI still important?" on
my site. Unfortunately, I got an email from someone saying
that the video was not visible on his iPad. Sure enough, when
I checked on my iPad, only a white box was visible where the
video should have been. I have therefore added a direct link
to the Youtube page for the video, but I think I have also
fixed the problem. iPad users should now see the video on my
website. The problem, it seems is in the code that Youtube
give us to embed the video. If you have a similar problem,
check out the embed code. Youtube adds the source of the
video like this:

"src="//www.youtube.com/embed"

Notice that the "http:" is missing from the URL. If you add
the http: back in, the video appears in your page. This works
for both the new embed code and the old.

If you tried to visit my page earlier on your iPad (or maybe
iPhone) and could not see the video, please try again:

OK, one other heads up.

Earlier in the week I told you about the Ultimate Social
Plugin that Matt Garrett had released. I also told you that
the price was going up periodically, and at midnight tonight,
it goes up to full price. The version I bought is the Multi-
site license that allows me to use the plugin on 25 sites.
That currently costs $67, but at midnight tonight, it will go
up to full price of $97. The developer version (unlimited
sites) more than doubles to $197. If you are interested in
this plugin, get it in the next couple of hours while it is on
special:

Hi Peter

With yet another major Google update recently called Hummingbird,
there is one question I get asked a fair bit. It's mainly from
people thinking of buying my Web Content Studio tool. The question
is this:

"Is LSI still important for ranking in Google?".

To answer this, I recorded a video with some experimental data I
collected this week. You can watch the video here:

If you have comments or questions, please leave them in the

Hi Peter

During the last week or so, I wrote a review about a social
locker plugin for Wordpress
(http://ezseonews.com/review/social-locker-review/). That
plugin can lock away some content on your posts and only show
the content if someone shares your page through a social
channel like Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. These types of
social signals are now highly coveted as search engines appear
to have turned up the power of social sharing in their ranking
algorithms. I love the social locker plugin, but it has
caused a problem on one or two of my sites with conflicts with
other Wordpress social plugins.

Earlier today, I saw a new plugin that was released by Matt
Garrett in the UK. I am sure, if you receive a lot of IM
newsletters, that you will already have heard of it. It's
called the Ultimate Social Plugin. What I love about this
plugin is that it includes a social locker feature, plus a
whole stack of other social features (check out the sales page
for a full list) That should mean I can now replace all of
my multiple social plugins with a single one, which should
reduce conflict issues. The only thing is, I only heard about
this plugin today, and the price is increasing every 24 hours
or so. I would have liked to have done a full review before
recommending it, but if I wait for that, the plugin will have
increased in price, even doubled what it is right now, until
midnight tonight.

There are three versions of this plugin. Single site, multi-
site and developer. The multi-site license allows you to use
the plugin on 25 sites, so that is enough for most people. If
you need more than that, go for the Developer which has no
limits.

Right now, the multi-site license is $47. However, tonight at
midnight it goes up to $67, and on Friday, the price goes up
to $97.

I will be installing it on a site of mine later this week, so
should be able to provide a full review. For more details on
this plugin, and to watch an intro video, go here:

Hi Peter

I'll apologise in advance for the short notice, but I only
found out about this 2 days ago. I guess it's also mainly for
those in Europe, though anyone visiting the UK can benefit too.

My friend Martin Avis has organised another fantastic KISS seminar
near London, UK, for the weekend of the 19th & 20th October.
This is the second one, after an amazing event in October 2012.
What makes this event so exciting to me, is it's "product
creation" agenda, powered by 6 well-known marketers.

Regular readers of my newsletter know that I have spent more and
more time with my own product creation in the last year - Kindle
& CreateSpace books, and that this part of my business has
really taken off. Well, it just so happens that one of the
speakers at KISS2 is Christine Clayfield who makes 7 figures a
year! Christine has around 80 self-published books to her name,
and she doesn't even write them herself. She outsources the
work. This is something I myself am starting to get involved in,
as it is a quick way to grow my own self-publishing empire.

Next up at KISS2 is Chris Payne, who was recently featured in the
UK's Sunday Times Magazine. You can read his story on his own
website here:
http://www.christopherjohnpayne.com/the-lifetools-story/

Rob Cornish is another great UK marketer who has had a lot of
success in more traditional Internet Marketing. At KISS2, he will
be talking about his software business, and you guessed it, he
cannot write any code himself. He'll tell you about the $300
investment that turned into more than $30,000 in sales.

Neil Stafford is another speaker at KISS2, and he'll tell you
all about using Public Domain books and turning them into products.
Neil will tell you everything you need to know to accurately
determine if something is in public domain, and then how you could
use it to create your own successful business. Oh, and I should
add that everything Neil teaches is 100% legal, backed up by his
own UK & US lawyer teams.

Two other speakers at the event are Sarah Staar and Cassie Hicks
Kerr who will cover other aspects of product creation, selling your
products and building your business.

The last speaker is Martin Avis himself. He has been a friend of
mine for a few years now, and is one of the good guys online.
Martin has a wealth of knowledge on many aspects of online
business, and has run his excellent Kickstart newsletter for as
long as I can remember.

I really wish that I had heard about this seminar earlier, because
it is one that I would have gone to myself. Maybe next year Martin!

Since Martin had to book the venue and organise special deals on
accommodation, there are limited spaces. Once they are gone, they
are gone.

If you have any more questions, you can use the contact form on the
KISS2 site.

To read more about KISS2 and the speakers, to contact Martin, and
