Where Are You Now?

Let me ask you a quick question before we
dive into the newsletter. Are you better
off now than you were a year ago?

If not, what you need is a fresh
perspective. A new set of eyes for
creative problem solving. Some people
and businesses I coach every week,
others need just a single consultation
to get back on track.

Ten days ago I helped a struggling
janitorial supply company. All it took
was a little brainstorming and a slight
improvement to the way they write web
copy. The result was a 30% boost in sales
in less than a week.

So if you have any challenges facing your
business, I want you to know that I'm
just a phone call away. It's a good
investment, no matter what projects you
have coming up.

How to Increase Your Optin Ratios

I ran a month long test on several
websites. I was curious if the optin on
the home page, would still perform better
than the one in the side bar. For the
test I followed the example in Ultimate
Heatmap (available from Amazon) and put
the form in the left sidebar.

56% of subscribers came from the inline
form that only appears on the home page.
44% used the sidebar, which appears on
every page of the site. This proves that
an inline form on the home page is still
the single most powerful place to put
your form.

If you remove the sidebar form, the
signup to unique visitor ratio falls
dramatically. So in other words, don't
use one or the other, put optin forms in
both places.

To create the optin forms, I use Aweber.
They have been my email system since
1998. They've been around long enough to
know what they're doing, and I highly
recommend them over the competition for
deliverability and reliability.

Oh... one more thing... don't believe in
the taunts from the social media pundits.
Permission based email marketing is not
dead, or even sleeping. In a world of
distractions, where attention is
currency, email is the gold standard.

Google's Position on Content Curation

Yes, content curation is ok. Matt Cutts,
Google's head of spam prevention said,
"Produce high quality stuff. Don't just
reprint stuff you find on the web.
Curation is not syndication. Use 100% all
original commentary. Use discretion,
because curation must be mostly original
content. Focus on the value add."

In addition, he said, "Don't slab up RSS
feeds, or press releasees, or keyword
searches, because they don't add any
value. Don't have automatically generated
content, spin stuff, or scrape results."

There you have it. Google says it's ok to
collect stuff, sort it, and provide links
to the best in class for your audience.
It's also ok if you write your own
commentary, interjecting opinions,
explanations, discussions, narratives
and reviews.

So think about the different ways you can
provide unique info, while following the
rules, and you should do well in search
results. Just be sure to follow 'fair
use' guidelines by quoting only brief
passages and by allowing comments on
every page that contains quoted content.

Google Warning Shots About AdSense

Google announced that you cannot put
AdSense ads on, near, or around third
party content. In other words, if you
don't own the copyright, or have express
permission to monetize the content, you
can't put ads on the same site as that
content anymore.

In addition, you can't frame content from
another site, or have ads on a site that
links to pirated content. The bottom line
being, if your site contains words,
videos (including Youtube videos), sounds
and images that aren't yours, you cannot
monetize it with AdSense.

Typical of Google, they didn't get into
details but left it vague and open to
their interpretation. So if you have a
Youtube video curation site, you might
consider monetizing using affiliate
programs, instead of AdSense, or face
whatever consequences Google has in mind.

Thesis Continues to Rock Wordpress

Last month I stated that Thesis had
regained its title as my favorite
Wordpress theme. I like it so much that
rave testimonial caught their attention
and is featured on the DIY Themes
home page.

But my excitement gave way... to
amazement. It's hard to believe that I
don't need help coding anymore. Every
single layout that I want to test, I can
do myself with a few mouse clicks.

If you're a fan of my Ultimate Heat Map
research, you know what I mean. Prior to
Thesis 2.1, you had to use Jedi mind
tricks to bend the CSS to get the layouts
you wanted.

Now it's easy to put widget areas in
custom templates, so you can have
recurring ads appear wherever you want.
You can also move the menu bar around and
further customize your look with what
they call Boxes.

Oh, there's one more thing. Unlike some
major Wordpress theme makers (you know
who you are) Thesis honors it's lifetime
members. They won't go back on their
promises.

So if you're ready to get true drag and
drop design freedom that you've always
wanted, get Thesis 2.1. You won't
regret it.

Proximity Marketing, No Internet Required

Coming soon to iOS7, is new technology
and software, which bypasses the internet
to reach consumers. This 'proximity
marketing' relies on pushing near field
(within 100 meters) signals through
bluetooth and permission from the
consumer in order to work.

An example would be a grocery store,
which sends sale notifications to your
mobile device, based on the isle you
happen to be visiting. It can also send
greetings upon entering the store, remind
you of past purchases that are currently
on sale, or send coupons that you can
redeem upon checkout.

Since the proximity doesn't rely on the
internet, the technology can be micro
managed at the retail level. But it can
also be managed over a network and
deployed over the internet, to thousands
of retail locations at the same time.

Press Releases are the New Junk Mail

Links from press releases don't work
anymore. If you put links to your website
from the release, it could get a two week
drop in rankings in Google. That's the
conclusion from two separate tests, but
at least the penalty is temporary.

The bigger problem lies in getting your
press release noticed. The press release
services compromised their future, for
short term gain, by selling packages that
allow one press release per day. That
opened the door for spammers, who quickly
dumped their dung into the last oasis of
links in the Google desert.

The proof is in the twitter stream. If
you monitor it phrase 'press release' it
can flow as high as 400 mentions per
minute. So with over 100,000 tweets per
work day, it means that there's little
hope of getting noticed.

The best way to get noticed, is to write
the release, but not use a release
service. Dig around the publications you
are trying to reach, find out who the
editors are and email them directly one
at a time. The more you focus on the
relationship, the more likely your
release will get read and published.

Ready for a 200% Increase in Sales?

I keep getting asked if I have a
mentorship program. Yes I do.

Just call me for coaching once a week.
No appointment is required. Just ping me
on Skype and we talk, the moment you
want some advice.

What? You think I should repackage my
coaching as 'mentoring' and charge 10
times as much? LOL... sorry!

I've been a marketing consultant since
1988. I don't believe in compromising my
integrity, or reputation for a short term
gain. I don't play that game. Never have.
Never will.

Mentoring is simple. Call me each week.

We'll take a look at where you are now
and where you want to be a week from now.
I'll assign work based on progress and
help motivate you towards your goals.

You can find out more about the coaching
and mentoring programs here:

BTW... virtual business like affiliate
marketing and ebook publishing are just
one path to success. The majority of the
people I mentor have real 'dirt world'
businesses, that ship physical products.

This week I helped a company that
sells water filters, increase conversion
rates from 6.5% to 13.5%. That's more
than double. So that's a 200% raise,
double the revenue, from a simple one
hour phone call.

Are you next?
