Internet Marketing Secrets
IMS #215 - March 22 2012

Peter,

Here is a bounty of useful tips, websites,
ideas and rants, aka "secrets" that I've
uncovered, poked at and thought about
lately. I hope that you put them to good
use, or at least file them away until
needed. ;-)

Don't Make This Mistake

The last thing you need are legal
problems. To prevent them from
happening, you need the proper
disclaimers on your websites and blogs.

The Legal Forms Generator creates those
disclaimer pages for you. They protect
your business and increase conversion
rates, because they make you look
professional.

It only takes a few minutes to get the
legal forms that you need. Then you can
rest assured, knowing that your online
business is respected and well protected.

INTERNET MARKETING SECRETS

Three Questions Prevent Failure

You might know Jim Collins for his works
Good to Great, or How the Mighty Fall.
Both of those are worth reading or
listening to, while you're exercising or
commuting. You'll discover why some
companies prosper while others fail.

Here's a quick short story from 2003.
Find out how Jim himself almost failed,
but found his calling as a researcher.
He's mentor asked him three questions.
I suggest that you ask them of yourself,
if you want to be successful and happy
in your work. http://bit.ly/5jIHEn

Pinterest Pins the Blame on You

Pinterest seems to be gaining plenty
of steam and attention in the press.
It's basically a scrapbooking site that
lets you collect, or "pin" things you're
interested in, so you can share them
with others.

Just beware of "what" you pin on Pinterest
though. If you violate copyright and get
in trouble, Pinterest's TOS says that you
hold them harmless, and agree to pay their
legal fees in addition to yours. Yikes!

Don't expect a claim of "fair use" to hold
up in court, just because commenting on
images is mandatory. Someone's really
going to "pin it" to them... and some poor
user. http://read.bi/xi78Od

Marketing Psychology

Susan Weinschenk Ph.D. aka The Brain
Lady - as featured on TED Talks - is one
to watch and learn from. Her research on
what makes people click is essential. So
is her work on neuro web design.

If you want to get inside the minds of
your customers, get everything of hers
that you can. And don't just read it once.
Memorize it. Read it over and over until
you know it. I have found her work to be
as important as Robert Cialdini and Roy H.
Williams. http://bit.ly/cUObnA

Better Calls to Action

Call to action is a phrase I coined back
in 1999. Essentially it's a few words,
usually in the form of a command, telling
the person what to do next. It could be to
make a purchase, subscribe, download a
report, or some other action.

A good call to action can increase your
conversion rates. For example, if you were
trying to get squirrels out of your attic,
which text would convert more; Download
the Report or Get Rid of Squirrels Now!

This post makes key points about creating
better calls to action. The only thing
they missed is the color of the button.
My "Color Persuasion" research (it's the
bonus report that you get with Ultimate
Heatmap) shows orange to be the most
effective color for a call to action
button. http://bit.ly/zXFI16

SEO for Wordpress

Joost de Valk is unquestionably the
leading mind when it comes to SEO for
Wordpress. If you're still using some
other SEO plugin, or the twaddle that
came with your theme, you might consider
trashing it for Joost's plugin instead.

Go search for Joost SEO and you'll find
it. Once you have it installed, read this
guide to optimize your site.

Then go watch this video, so you can get
more out of it. Plus you'll find some gems
on SEO in general, like why it's smart to
shut off the date archives in Wordpress.

Keyword Research

Right after market research comes
keyword research. Most people are
familiar with the Google Keyword tool
and third party services like Wordtracker.
But one little-known tool is a service
called Ubersuggest.

Ubersuggest uses Google and other
suggest type services for results.
They also provide insight into shopping,
news, video, even recipes. Simply enter
your root word into the tool and get back
hundreds of keyword ideas from real user
queries. http://bit.ly/FOJc0Z

Google Detects & Deletes Blog Networks

In the last few weeks, Google has been
deindexing private blog networks. These
are services that sell links and let you
post to hundreds of blogs at a time. It
doesn't matter if they are on separate IP
addresses or not. http://bit.ly/xp2EhB

Most of the content posted on these "blog
link farms" were spun articles, creating
several backlinks from unrelated content.
Even if the content and titles were spun
up to 50%, Google found three word
fingerprints, as well as sudden link
growth, and penalized the lot.
http://bit.ly/FOonpG

Google publicly stated they are, "...
turning off a method of link analysis that
we used for several years." It appears to
be link popularity - the shear number of
links - that won't matter anymore. What
will matter are quality links, and deep
links, in context, from topically related
content.

Google's Freshness Factor

Sudden link growth isn't always a bad
thing. You could get 1,000 links overnight
and not be penalized. So long as there's
social proof to back it up.

Most new links would come from related
blog categories - at least related at a
high level like travel, exercise, cars -
while others would come from casual
bloggers. The trick to avoiding the filter
is the social factor. There needs to be
enough buzz in the social media space to
warrant the sudden link growth.

So in other words, don't worry about
Google's Freshness Factor, unless you have
a site dealing with news, sports, weather,
or some other time sensitive content.
Those are the only times when freshness
matters. Stick to writing quality content
that you have some level of expertise in,
and you will create the kind of content
that naturally attracts quality links over
time.

Then as you creep up the rankings, it will
be nearly impossible to knock you out of
the top 10. (Unless you do something
really silly like participating in private
blog networks.) ;-)

Advertising and Persuasion

Serious students of advertising have
missed Terry O'Reilly's Age of Persuasion
podcast since it stopped in June of 2011.
He's one of the brightest minds in
advertising. His shows are entertaining,
informative, bursting with fun facts and
nuggets of wisdom.

You can pick up several of the past
episodes and subscribe to the old iTunes
feed, if you missed any shows.
http://bit.ly/yw5X6U Or better yet, you
can catch his new show Under the Influence
on iTunes. Just go search for it and enjoy
all new episodes of Terry's genius.
